About Holbox Island

Holbox Island, was founded in 1873, led by polbox name, now known as Maya Holbox which means black hole, also the inhabitants call it "The Island of Sharks"

Holbox, a place with roots in the Mayan culture, its people proud of their past and their identity, are both guardians of this unique paradise, stunning natural scenery of the Mexican Caribbean. Some time ago the island was a refuge for sailors even pirates.

The people of Holbox, currently still living on fishing, but additionally they are learning to take advantage of its unique attractions and beautiful beaches, swim with whale sharks, fishing, bird watching, lagoons, cenotes and more.

The island has approximately 3,000 inhabitants, is located in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico on the north side of the Yucatan Peninsula, shared waters of the Caribbean and also for its location in the Gulf of Mexico waters, a few kilometers are famous cities like Cancun, Chichen Itza, Playa del Carmen, Valladolid and Merida.

The island even though it lacks some services such as banks and large shopping malls or nightclubs, but offers many other attractions that attract more tourists every day who seek the beauty of its water and energy provided by the nature of the site.

Holbox means in Mayan language "hole or black hole" and owes its name to a spring or small waterhole located here. The vegetation of the bottom is dark and when viewed from a distance or from above, it looks like a black hole. It is also said that the waters here have curative and rejuvenating powers.

The Holbox sand streets are part of the charm, the colorful Caribbean houses will enchant you and the mixture of cultures that you can see in the rich gastronomy of the place, which includes seafood, international cuisines, such as Italian and Argentine, and flavors of pre Hispanic cuisine. Holbox island is definitely a site you should visit!
